Some days you need to feel sad or disappointed or lonely, and that’s okay. It’s good to feel those emotions. We’re not supposed to be happy all the time.

The human experience is a mixed bag of emotions. We need the negative to understand and appreciate the positive.

The best thing to do when you’re feeling negative emotion is to feel it, to stay with it, and be present.

We’ve been socialized to think negative emotions are bad. And when we try to escape or avoid them, we create more negativity for ourselves – we overeat, we overdrink, consume TV and social media. All of which offer only temporary relief.

Instead, try to allow the emotion.

When you open up to it, you gain some authority over the feeling, instead of it controlling you.

This is a skill you can learn and practice.

Choose humanness over happiness and embrace it all.
